Sports Watches: The Tool of the Active by Brad Brunson
Are watches a piece of jewelry, a simple timepiece, a fashion statement, or a useful multifunction tool? For those with an active lifestyle, it is safe to say that a watch is more of a tool than anything else. The sports watch has progressed from just a normal watch with a digital display and stopwatch feature, to a multifunctional tool that is essential for sports, health and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
The digital age brought in a slew of new opportunities for nearly every product in the world. Everything seems to be digital these days, and that holds true for sports watches. These timepieces-with-a-purpose have evolved into a tool with more capabilities than your first home computer. This goes far beyond the days of a simple digital display with a cool indi-glo back-lit feature.
The first sports watches were merely a watch with a stop-clock function. This proved very useful for timing laps, 40-yard dashes and more. But in the past few years especially, these devices have transformed into a virtual mini-computer equipped with everything from a calendar, heart rate monitor, to GPS capabilities. Making them a useful device for anyone who isn’t just looking to add to their outfit.
Here are some common features of today’s sports watches:
Stopwatch
Calendar
LED Back-lit Display
Water Resistance
Daylight Savings Auto Adjust
World Time Displays
Solar Power
Shock Resistant
Altimeters
Time Calibration
Alarm Clock
Snooze Button
Auto Illumination
Dual Time Display
GPS
Temperature Display
Humidity Display
Step Counter
Magnetic Resistant
Countdown Timer
The only thing missing is text messaging and email capabilities!
After viewing that list it is hard to argue these wristwatches being considered as tools, more than a jewelry or fashion piece. And these features are just one part of the evolution. The other improvements come in the construction of the watch itself. Equal focus has been put into developing a more durable product. What good are all of the features if the thing gets broken in a week?
Most of these watches are built to nearly indestructible specifications. If they aren’t made of metal, they are crafted from a hard plastic resin. Some even double the resin coating and add a shock resistant gel for further durability. Most are also made with stainless steel hardware to prevent rust. They are also constructed to be air tight to prevent mud or water from leaking in and destroying the piece.
With all of these features and toughness, there is really no excuse as to why anyone who is either an exercise fanatic, an outdoors-man, sports enthusiast, or someone who works in construction, would go without a sports watch. It won’t be long before someone comes out with a internet capable watch. Actually, maybe I should take that idea and run with it.
